If you're stressed out, yoga is one of the most effective ways to lower your stress level. This video is just one of many that offers health and wellness tips at http://bit.ly/2j1jiqn Doreen Oberg, registered nurse and a primary yoga instructor at The Villages Health®, offers an introduction to the practice of yoga, a set of physical, mental and spiritual practices that originated in ancient India. First, Doreen Oberg explains, yoga is about self-awareness. We can’t always explain all the aspects of yoga because yoga is about performing actions—the practice is an act of doing, not an act of analysis. One of the primary functions of gentle yoga is to open the spine, which helps to reduce stress. The practice is about the bio-mechanics of physical movements, using pace and intention to center practitioners of yoga in the present moment. By centering practitioners in the present moment, yoga helps people to focus behind their intellect and move beyond their emotions to help reduce stress and improve flexibility and relaxation. Yoga practitioners may find the practice causes stress on their spine or joints at first. Doreen Oberg cautions that as your practice improves, you will find that you are able to hold poses longer, as well as benefit from improved circulation. Some poses may not be so easy for each yoga practitioner, and that’s okay; practice will help improve your ability and your endurance. The important thing, she says, is that the practice of yoga should not hurt. Finally, we learn that most yoga sessions begin and end with the teacher saying the word “Namaste.” Namaste is a respectful Hindi greeting that means, “The light in me sees the light in you.” Learn more about yoga: http://bit.ly/2j8OxQa Disclaimer: This content is for entertainment purposes only and it is not meant to be relied on as medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
