It’s been nearly a decade since the arrival of the “smartphone” as we know it today, those pocket computers that we occasionally use to make phone calls. But it’s the constant texting, email checks and social media perusing that has created a virtual epidemic of adults with neck or shoulder pain. “Text neck is a condition usually seen in younger people between the ages of 18 and 44,” says Ronald Tolchin, D.O., medical director of Baptist Center for Spine Care, part of Baptist Health Neuroscience Center. “It’s almost at epidemic proportions.” Want to see more? It's almost actually at an epidemic proportion. Up to 79 or 80% of individuals in that age range have difficulty with neck pain. They found, when they look at the behaviors of those individuals, is that they bring their head forward when they're texting and they can text from two to four hours a day. Not all constantly, although some, for more than one hour. And if I can show this position, they're in their phones like this with their neck bent about 60 degrees forward. They're looking down the whole time and before they know it, and they have neck pain. We found that it's attributed in many cases to our high-tech world right now, whether it be a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone device. [Many text from 2 to 4 hours a daily] Ronald Tolchin: Complaints of patients with text neck is usually neck pain that's non-radiating in the back of their neck and up to the shoulders, usually. They have shoulder pain and stiffness in their shoulder. So we want to try to make the device at eye level. Secondly, we want to try to limit the time they're in that position so we want to have them take more frequent breaks. I know we're not going to curtail the habits of texting in this day and age and using the computers for extended periods of time, but it's important to break some of the habits, change position, have them take a break, get up and walk around, and then come back to it so they'll at least start to stretch. And then I often give them exercises to supplement that. [Dr. Tolchin shows you how to alleviate text neck in an upcoming blog post. Stay tuned.] [Baptist Health South Florida] [End Transcript]
