The Psoas Major is a long muscle that runs from your spine, over the front of your pelvis, to your thigh; connecting the front of your body to the back. This long range of influence means if you never open up your front, you can actually end up feeling a tonne of tightness in your back! It's normal to stretch the place that feels tight, but because the tightness is actually being caused by restriction in the front, stretching your back won’t help long term, it will only give temporary relief. The Psoas plays a role in the position of your spine, flexing your hips, and even how you walk so you want to keep it open and mobile, but our daily lives are constanting shortening our fronts: sitting and slouching most of the day is pulling you down into a "hunched gargoyle" position (or feotal position as it's more commonly know... ) so it's really important to open up and extend your torso regularly! Here are two great variations for you to start working on! Try them both and see where you are at! Even when you can do both, the beginner variation is nice when you are feeling lazy - you can do it lying in bed!
