Presentation of "Colonial collections, data management, and the responsible use of AI" project by the Royal Armouries. It received the Collections Trust Award 2024-25. It seems museums must always do more with less: maintain their collections while also offering a novel and engaging visitor experience despite insufficient time and resources. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools apparently offer simple solutions to these challenges. However, their use come with problems that put them in tension with the educative, social and cultural missions of museums. In a world of decolonisation, can a museum ever use AI ethically? To find out, the UK government funded a multidisciplinary team to examine these tensions. This talk introduces their award-winning exploration of applying AI within and beyond collections with a colonial origin. Presented by Mark Bennett, Research Manager, The Royal Armouries The Royal Armouries is the UK’s national collection of arms and armour, the oldest public museum in the world and accredited as an Independent Research Organisation since 2022. Dr Mark Bennett, a historian of international warfare, both manages the museum’s internal research and coordinates its engagement with external academics.
