Who is supposed to take care of the disenfranchised people of the world: the widows, the orphans, and the friendless? Today's saying tells us that God is their strong defender. This is a comforting thought, until you realize he is defending them from us. The first defense of the disenfranchised should be their fellow man. It is only when we fail them and victimize them that they need God's protection. You are God's first line of defense for the downtrodden. When you do the right thing, you honor God, your family, your community, and, of course, those you are protecting. When you fail to protect others, you dishonor God and your fellow man, and you bring the fearful prospect of judgment upon yourself. For God will defend the unfortunate and punish those who take advantage of them. This is another episode in the series entitled, "The Sayings of the Wise."
