The promised land is described in the Bible as a land flowing with milk and honey. It is symbolized by honey, because it is a sweet reward for those who faithfully follow the Lord in the wilderness. Wisdom is also a sweet reward for those who find and practice it. That is why it is compared to honey in this Saying of the Wise in Proverbs 24, verses 13-14: 13 Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. 14 Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. We have been noting throughout our study that these sayings encourage taking a long-term view of life. To maximize happiness for you and those around you, you must avoid the short-term, selfish decisions that take advantage of others and choose instead to follow God and his teachings. Those teachings tell us to treat others as we would like them to treat us. Maybe that is why the manna that God provided to feed the people in the wilderness tasted like honey. It was a daily reminder to keep their focus on the beautiful land that was at the end of the wandering. Likewise, God makes wisdom taste sweet to our souls. It reminds us to live to the ideal in a less-than-ideal place, knowing that a sweet and ideal future awaits us. This is another episode in the series entitled, "The Sayings of the Wise." Join father and son, Timothy and Caleb, while they explore the wisest sayings of the ancient world as recorded in the book of Proverbs. Find out why we all need to learn them and put them into practice. You're listening to Bible Discussions on @BiblocusWhere the Bible intersects with your life.
