Stiff Neck? The neck is a part of the spine which actually has one of the most degrees of freedom. If we notice how we can use it - it can tilt, rotate, circle, and even start a wave! Unfortunately, for many of us, we only ever look in front of us or down to our phones, maybe sometimes over our shoulder to check whilst driving. But the head was designed to give us amazing angles of freedom so we could scan our horizon. So where can we start? I provide an approach to developing intentional control and range in the cervical spine; 02:25 1. Side to Side Tilts 05:30 2. Up Down Tilts 05:58 3. Rotation 07:54 4. Universal Circle 09:26 5. Forward Backward Oscillations 11:24 6. Side to Side Oscillations 16:10 7. Sagittal Circles 18:08 8. Frontal Circles 20:05 9. Transverse Circles 21:50 10. Methodology and Application into Waves Even those some of these look simple; isolating them into the intentional contexts and constraints provided in the video will challenge you. Are you moving as you exactly intended? Start off with the tilts and rotations, a good protocol is either daily or once every 2 days, practising each of these for 2-3 mins each. Once you've developed good control there, you can move onto the circle and then the oscillations. Be patient and over time (months!) you'll be able to expand your movement ability with the cervical spine. The methodology I demonstrate here can be replicated at all other parts of the spine - how can you tilt, rotate, oscillate, circle and generate waves from the tailbone, mid abdomen, upper chest? Explore and be rewarded! This is a combination of material learnt from Thomas Emerson under the Praksis Practitioner Program (@PraksisCanberra ). Questions? Let me know in the comments!
