Gooseberry/Nallikayi Rasam is a tangy and mildly spiced healthy rasam (south Indian soup like broth) made from wholesome gooseberries - full of nutrients and vitamins. Nallikayi is rich in antioxidants, low in calories, high in fiber, immunity booster, controls blood sugar, nutrient-rich and have many more health benefits. Nallikayi rasam is an easy, healthy, and tasty south Indian soup variety.. It's a spicy and tangy treat for our taste buds. In this tasty rasam, Nallikayi are ground along with tomato, pepper-cumin and other Indian spices, making this rasam simply superb. Also few steamed amla are added to enhance the rasam taste. The sourness of this rasam is mainly from gooseberry and tomatoes. Adjust the tomatoes according to the goosberry you use and its sourness. Avoid boiling the rasam for a long time, always cook rasam till you see a frothy boil then turn off the stove Traditionally Amla Rasam is enjoyed with a bowl of hot steamed rice but amazing as a light and healthy soup any time too. This amla rasam is excellent in the winter season for its high Vitamin C content and healing properties. Let's see how I prepared: Amla Rasam or Nallikayi Saaru / rasam Ingredients: Amla 6-8 for steaming For grinding Pepper corns 1 tbsp Jeera 1tbsp Amla 3-4 Tomato medium size 1 Green chillies 2-3 Ginger 2 inches big Toor dal 1/2 cup Haldi a pinch Salt to taste Water as required For tempering: Ghee 2 tbsp Jeera 1 tsp Red chillies 1-2 Curry leaves handful Method : Wash and steam amla for 8-10 minutes (Don't over cook. Amla should be crunchy and almost cooked) Keep it aside Grind all the mentioned ingredients by adding water to get a smooth paste Transfer the paste to a pan Add adequate amount of water and allow it to boil Add salt and haldi Once the raw smell goes, add cooked and mashed toor dal Allow it to boil Add steamed amla and let it boil until it's frothy.
