In this flight conditions were perfect to go VFR on top and whilst above the clouds, slow things down with a general handling exercise. I even afforded myself several moments to really indulge in the breath taking views. Once clear of controlled airspace and into open FIR, I climb above the cloud layer, heading North-West. I then practice some general handling, climbing, cruising and descending with flaps. This seemed like a logical exercise that also improved my forward visibility and I believe greatly assisted with the descent back down through the cloud layer. Once back beneath the cloud layer I position for a straight in approach to Runway 05 at Sleap. I am not an instructor and I am not advocating that other pilots copy these exercises. I am merely sharing the approach I planned for this flight. Target airspeed for the Vx climb with flaps was 65kts. Target airspeed cruising with flaps was 85kts. Once configured with flaps all turns conducted were very gentle. Careful attention was paid throughout to engine management. Remember that this was relevant to this particular flight, the conditions on the day, in the particular aircraft being flown. Owain, another Private Pilot, who I have flown with previously was supposed to join me for this flight, but unfortunately he was unable to make it on the day. Hopefully we can arrange something soon.
