The Breyer is a variation of the Closed Ruy Lopez. It begins after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Nb8 and the move Nb8 is the Breyer Variation or the Breyer Defense. The Breyer is, along with the Zaitsev and the Chigorin, one of the main lines of the entire Ruy Lopez. It was introduced by Gyula Breyer in 1911, and since then, almost every strong grandmaster used it. Today, every top player has the Breyer in their repertoire, including Magnus and all other top 10 Super GMs. The Breyer Variation is strange if you don't understand it. Black plays Nb8, seemingly losing a couple of tempi moving the same piece twice, and to the back rank! But the knight has a bright future. Black's idea is to reroute the knight to c5 by playing Nd7, c5, c4 and Nc5. In many ways, the Breyer is a safer way to deal with black's strategic problems in the Closed Ruy Lopez than the Chigorin, since there the knight is offside on a5 for a looong time. I have broken the video down into four parts. Firstly, resources, then the basic strategy of the Breyer and the most common pawn structures, and then two theoretical parts, one covering the main line, and the other all the sidelines for white and for black. 0:00 Introduction 01:32 Resources on the Breyer Variation of the Ruy Lopez 05:51 Strategy and Structures in the Breyer Variation 13:44 Theory of the Breyer Variation, Part 1: The main line 28:31 Theory of the Breyer Variation, Part 2: Sidelines 48:46 Conclusion This is the third of 34 videos in the Spanish series. Unlike my previous Ruy Lopez series, this one is more detailed, better structured, and it covers every variation playable by both sides.
