Lore You step in and see a spotlight at the center of the room, illuminating what looks like a checkered floor. Not another other living soul can be found nearby. You cautiously move towards the light, its diffuse beam revealing just a few more squares outside of its main perimeter. You tighten your grip on the sword and shield because you know this entity's trickery. You're not afraid. You're not afraid! Of course you're not afraid! You're NOT afraid!!! The jittery feeling that is making your arms tremble is just excitement - you look forward to slaying the thing that took your uncle from you. As you step foot into the center of the light, a loud bang rings through the room. It doesn't come from any particular direction. Instead, it feels like this banging "thump" surrounds you from all sides. Then comes another. And another. It has rhythm! It has begun. You swipe your sword in a wide 360 degree arc, but it connects with nothing. As the thumping gets faster, you hear more sounds filling the air, different varieties of bleeps and bloops, echoing as they bounce off the room's unseen walls. But it doesn't matter what sounds you hear, the music will not take control of you. Your resolve is unbreakable. You continue swinging aimlessly around you, but to no avail. After a few moments, two pinpricks of light coming from one of the dark corners of the room catch your eye. You stop swinging and focus on them. Shortly thereafter, a fiendish grin shows itself beneath the two beads of light, its mouth filled with countless jagged teeth. In a deep and raspy voice, the floating face says "How wonderful, the nephew finally arrived! You do know the rules, don't you?" You plant your feet firmly on the ground and refuse to give in, no matter how strong the urge to just dance might be. Wait... Your breathing! It's in sync with the music!!! And your body weight - you're shifting it left to right with the thumping beat! The grin opens wider and taunts you: "There are only two options here, and I'm happy to see you've chosen my favorite one. Now let's get to it, shall we?" You take a deep breath and collect yourself for a brief moment. Then, all at once, you charge at the bodiless face while belting out in a rage: "DIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!" Its menacing laughter fills the air as you step out of the light and into the dark void. Production Details This is a song I wrote especially for my debut live performance which took place at the Houston Piano Company on Aug 30, 2025. I wanted to write something super dancy, bit also heavily chiptune-inspired. Then I noticed I could make things feel super dark with a reverb filled PWM pad in the back. I'm really happy how this one turned out - definitely one of my favorites. Thanks so much for listening!
