Afghanistan - taking stock and looking forwards

Hosts: Dr. Marie Nissanka and Andrew Collins The cataclysmic humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan sees many try to desperately flee, while some continue to live under an uncertain Taliban regime. This situation was a long time in the making and many would argue that international actors played a significant role in shaping the conditions that led to the current crisis. In this session we focus on international efforts in Afghanistan including its goals and programmes to simultaneously address terrorism, promote democracy, build peace and support development. We explore the results and legacies of these efforts, how they are enmeshed in the current crisis and what lessons can be learned about future engagement in the country, including how positive gains such as health, education and women’s rights can be protected. Prof. Jonathan Goodhand: A professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Jonathan has worked for several years managing humanitarian and development programmes in conflict situations in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He has extensive experience as a researcher and advisor in South and Central Asia for a range of NGOs and aid agencies, including DFID, SDC, ILO and UNDP. Jonathan’s research includes peacebuilding, reconstruction and the the political economy of aid and conflict as illustrated by his project on the opium trade in Afghanistan: GCRF Drugs and (Dis)order: https://drugs-and-disorder.org/ Dr. Hafiza Yazdani: Hafiza is a gender and peace education specialist with several years of experience working with international organisations such as the World Bank, UN Women and USAID and the Swedish Embassy in Kabul to promote human rights, gender equality and peace in Afghanistan. Her doctoral research (completed through the National Centre of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Otago), investigated peace education in Afghanistan where she analysed and evaluated three different approaches to peace education. Hafiza also holds a Masters degree in Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution. Joseph Schumacher: Joseph has worked in Afghanistan in a number of positions over the past decade. He is currently the Senior Evaluation Advisor for the 'Afghanistan Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Activity (AMELA)'. This is USAID's independent MEL contract in Afghanistan. He was the M&E director for USAID's largest stabilization program in Afghanistan from 2010 - 2012. He has undertaken conflict analysis reports for USAID in Kenya, Pakistan, and Somalia; and drafted DFID's Monitoring Strategy for Afghanistan after the 2014 withdrawal.
