Here at Studio SWEAT, Cat Kom and Bethany are celebrating Christmas in August. Instead of sipping on a warm mug of eggnog and desperately praying Santa will bring a rice cooker instead of socks this year, Cat and Bethany are honoring Christmas by presenting their SWEATERS with answers to what is most important during spinning…. Speed or the Resistance, which is more important? According to Cat, the answer is both. When focusing on a single variable, you can become obsessed with the digits - monitor and potentially dangerously forcing yourself to hit a crazy high speed that are out of control. Pushing yourself to arrive at unreachable numbers when it comes to cadence (or many things for that matter) can ruin the best of classes, and limit your potential for growth. Therefore, when it comes to cycling (indoor or out) when you balance both speed and the level of resistance being used, the body is presented with a controlled challenge that you can benefit and grow from. Your instructor should be guiding you (or demonstrating) how the ride should feel throughout a Spinning class. She should say, for example, ”All right class, pickup a moderate pace (let’s say 80RPMs) with challenging resistance (higher gear), something you can only maintain for 30 seconds.” That’s going to be a heavier gear, but if she says, “Moderate Pace at 80RPMs, recover for 3 minutes”, it’s going to require less resistance. So although the question of gear versus speed can be subjective and tailored to personal preferences, including both factors to find your sweet spot on the bike are key. And, if you have to choose one as more important, Cat says it’s gear, always pick riding with some resistance on over hummingbird legs. Don’t just try to go faster (or as fast as) the person next to you. For all you know they’re just spinning their flywheels with no resistance and getting nowhere fast. Plus, now you know Christmas is not so much about opening presents, but rather, opening our minds to how our body’s feels, and listening to what our body wants and needs over letting metrics cloud our thoughts and levels of success.
