Learning how to be kind to herself and making the most of group support is what took Lizz Pleace all the way to her dream weight – and it’s what’s helping her stay there, too. This is her story. "Just before my 30th birthday, my work offered free medical check-ups to everyone. I knew I was overweight – for as long as I could remember there’d been no escaping that – but to see the reality written down in black and white was terrifying. At 29, I was over 19st, had joint pain, inflammation and asthma, and was at the highest risk of developing type 2 diabetes. On top of that, I’d learnt that because of my weight and family history, I was also at acute risk of developing heart problems in the not-too-distant future. Up until that moment, I’d only ever thought about my weight in terms of how bad it made me feel about myself emotionally. Now, I had to face up to the fact that I was also dangerously damaging my physical health, and I was hit by a wave of anxiety and shame. I’d heard about Slimming World through my mum, who’d been a member. My cousin Gemma was planning on joining too, so we decided to go together. It was the best decision I ever made. The minute I walked into Jo’s Slimming World group, I could tell this was going to be a whole different ball game. What she told me about the eating plan in her new-member talk made perfect sense and didn’t sound like any kind of diet. Jo recommended I keep a food diary for the first few weeks, but I was feeling so upbeat and confident, I told myself I could manage without. I threw myself into the Food Optimising eating plan – or so I thought – and couldn’t believe it when I weighed in at group the next week to find I’d gained 1½lbs. Jo quickly picked up on how dejected I was feeling and did the best thing she possibly could have done: encourage me to stay for the full group session. So rather than going straight home after weighing in, upset and likely to make more unhelpful choices, I stayed for IMAGE Therapy and listened to the other members share what obstacles they’d faced that week, and to Jo as she gave them personalised support and advice. Jo reassured me that not getting the loss I’d been expecting just meant that I’d missed something and there was nothing to beat myself up about. The important thing was to work out what it was, so I could draw a line and fix it for the coming week. I was touched by how eager everyone was to support me, and it struck me that never before had I been part of a group of people so invested in helping others around them. This time I went home fully committed to keeping a food diary, and found it really helped me be mindful of the little things I’d been missing before. Jo texted me after a couple of days to check if I had any questions and to cheer me on, and I knew my group were rooting for me, too. I lost 4½lbs! At Slimming World, I learned that small steps add up to a big difference, and that making small changes to my lifestyle could help me create lasting habits. Because Jo encouraged me to set a mini-target every week, it made my whole journey feel so much more manageable – and getting to celebrate every milestone in group with my friends felt amazing! The encouragement from Jo and the group also gave me the confidence to start moving more. Before, I’d avoid any activity – even if it was a fun day out with friends or colleagues. I steadily built up my activity which has been great for my overall physical and mental health. My proudest moment was on my birthday this year. To celebrate, my friends and I took on a water obstacle course. Before Slimming World, I’d never have dreamed of taking part, especially as it involved wearing a swimsuit and being active in public! And I loved every minute of it – I didn’t care that people were looking at me and I wasn’t self-conscious anymore. In the space of 18 months I lost over 9st and achieved my final target weight. I’d dropped from a size 22 to an 8, and felt better than I ever had in my whole life. For the first time, I could go shopping with friends and not be the one looking self-consciously at the shoes and bags because none of the clothes would fit. A blood test at my GP surgery showed everything was back in the normal range, and I was no longer struggling with joint pain or constantly reaching for my asthma inhaler. My life was totally transformed. I was finally the young, self-confident, single woman I’d always wanted to be, living in a world bursting with new possibilities. Thanks to Slimming World, I’ve found my confidence again and I no longer base my self-worth on what I think others think about me. I love who I am now – and I know I can do anything I set my mind to!" If you want to find out more about how Slimming World can help you lose weight go to https://www.slimmingworld.co.uk/
