Abstract #10.04.01 — A Modeling Process Framework for Addressing Undernutrition Through Agriculture Author(s) :: Gabrielle Smith, Cassidy Rist Author(s) Affiliation(s) :: Hampton University (GS), Virginia Tech (CR) Despite global efforts, high rates of undernutrition indicate a critical need to investigate effective applications of interventions to mitigate undernutrition and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2); specifically, SDG 2.2. The assessment of nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions, a major and often first pathway to sustainable nutrition goals, is necessary to ensure the effective and sustainable reduction of undernutrition. The current state of assessment seems to be infrequent and disjointed, as it has been shown that a lack of collaboration between organizations and administrations has even allowed interventions with counteracting effects to be implemented in the same population. Further, experimental or empirical approaches to investigating the role of nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions is costly and growing difficult as decision-makers have a rising need for evidence-based methods before providing funding for interventions. In this study, a modeling framework is proposed and applied as a case study to milk-producing households in Uganda to investigate quantifiable impacts of agricultural productivity on household nutrition. The findings of this study highlight concerns about the suitability of available data to inform intervention development and emphasize the necessity for well-balanced interdisciplinary teams to adequately, comprehensively, and computationally capture nutrition-sensitive agricultural systems.
