Nathan Pritikin was diagnosed with moderate to severe coronary artery disease at about 40 years of age. He figured out how to cure himself; then devoted his life to helping others. His study of epidemiology showed him that some populations do not get coronary artery disease. His study of populations with food rationing in 1944 showed that the incidence of myocardial infarction dropped dramatically, despite the high stress levels at that time; this indicates that diet is more important than stress for causing coronary artery atherosclerosis. Pritikin made an exhaustive study of the nutrition literature available to him. When traveling to give lectures on nutrition, he would carry a briefcase with hundreds of nutritional research papers. Nathan Pritikin's book "The Pritikin Program for diet and exercise" is very good; with an extensive appendix summarizing nutritional research studies. There are multiple online videos of Pritikin. The best one has 6.2 hours continuous of him lecturing. Pritikin covers basic topics in a clear way: does cholesterol cause atherosclerosis? should postmenopausal women be given a calcium supplement? are people able to maintain good cognitive function when eating only .7% fat (linoleate, C18:2, w-3) in their diet (study by Winitz).
