In this episode, we leave behind the spectacle of great temples and public religion to discover ancient Roman religion as it was practiced in the most personal of places: the Roman home. We explore the world of the Lares, asking who they were, how they were worshipped, and what role they played in a family's fortunes. Apart from illustrating how religion permeated daily life in the domestic sphere, the Lares show us just how powerful and emotive such gods could be to the individuals who lived with them and attended to them daily. We hear the prologue of an ancient play by Plautus, a prayer recorded by the statesman Cato the Elder, and some poetry from Ovid, Horace, and Tibullus. We also hear the myth of Larunda and look at some of the splendid archaeology in Pompeii and Herculaneum. *** This is the sixth in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god. Our task is to recover Rome's lesser-known deities from obscurity and, ultimately, to better understand the religion that fuelled an empire. Welcome to the Shadows of Olympus!
