This session was presented as part of the Fab Educators Summit 2026, a global, volunteer-run event bringing together educators using digital fabrication, makerspaces, and emerging technologies in K–12 classrooms around the world. Learn more about the Fab Educators Summit at www.eduFAB.org Details about this session at Fab Educators Summit 2026 Presented by: Kristin Burrus, STEM School Chattanooga, Tennessee Session Title: A Maker’s Journey: Building Skills One Tool at a Time The session will outline our two-year progression in teaching Fab Lab safety to freshmen and sophomore students at a public high school. Starting with simple hand tools and moving on to more complex (and dangerous) power tools, students create wood-based products culminating in CNC carved stools. The session will outline two 3-week units we use to move students from complete beginners to safe tool users and CNC operators. The units include synchronous and asynchronous classroom activities, skill checks, and design challenges. While students do not leave with all the skills included in a traditional shop class, they are proficient users and can be trusted with the tools in our Fab Lab. Our ultimate goal is to provide students with the skills they will need to dream, design, and build quality prototypes during their junior and senior years.
