Many dancers feel like they are fighting to get onto demi-pointe. One common reason is limited mobility through the metatarsals and toes, particularly the big toe. Ideally, dancers should have about 90° of dorsiflexion or extension in their toes so the foot can move smoothly onto the platform of the metatarsal heads during demi-pointe. In this video, I demonstrate a simple stretch designed to improve mobility through the metatarsals and toes, helping the foot articulate more easily when rising onto demi-pointe. Improving forefoot mobility can help with: • smoother transitions to demi-pointe • better balance on the platform of the foot • reduced strain through the ankle and Achilles • improved foot articulation in ballet As a physical therapist who works with dancers, I often use exercises like this to help improve foot mechanics and reduce overload in the forefoot. ⚠️ If you have pain in the forefoot, a bunion, or a recent injury, consult a qualified professional before performing this exercise.
