Self Massage is a great way to help stimulate and release your body, mind, and emotions. The ability to accept external pressure on your bones, joints, and skin can be a foundational practice for many people. The density of your prop (foam roller, or massage ball etc.) does impact the exercises. In general a harder/denser prop will feel more intense but may be more surface/shallow. A softer density prop can help you feel deeper layers soft tissues encouraging the entire body to release. -Enjoy! The downside of the harder density prop is that you may be bracing and creating tension in your body as a response to the intensity of the prop. Creating tension is the opposite goal of this practice. The downside of a softer prop is that for people who prefer more intense feelings, the lack of intensity may not be enough stimulation to be engaging. Finding your own comfort level is essential. Find your level of desired intensity and remember the goal is breathing and releasing, not grinding your teach and bearing it.... -Enjoy! You may not feel you want to use them however; Pillows, Cushions, Towels, Soft Blocks and other props are essential tools. Props support your body and foster deep awareness, autonomy, and strength. Using props does not make you weak or less than your personal best. Allowing yourself to embrace tension free and comfortable positions is an efficient means of gaining the full benefits of a life long exercise practice.
