This walk winds from the quiet reaches near Old Grimsby down to the palm-studded southern coastline, giving a true sense of the island’s split personality—wild and ancient inland, then suddenly exotic and groomed as you near the Abbey Gardens. Each turn reveals a softer breeze, a broader sky, and the slow rhythm of island life. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore The walk begins on the fringes of Old Grimsby, a small settlement with far-reaching sea views and a timeworn charm. From there, it moves through sandy tracks and gentle heathland, past stone barns and wildflower meadows that shimmer with bees and butterflies. Tresco is one of the only places in Britain where succulents line the footpaths. In the heart of the island, you’ll encounter hints of Tresco’s carefully curated character. It’s the only island in the Scillies not run by the Duchy of Cornwall, but leased to the Dorrien-Smith family, who’ve transformed it into something part-holiday-retreat, part-subtropical haven. Even the signage feels boutique—wooden, carved, and slightly too elegant for a remote Atlantic outpost. The walk ends near Tresco Abbey Garden—home to 20,000 exotic plants from every corner of the globe. You might not enter the gardens, but the warmth and lushness spill beyond their walls. Even the breeze feels balmier here. It’s easy to see why they call this the “Scillies’ jewel.” This isn’t just a crossing—it’s a quiet revelation. The sea peeks through gaps in the hedgerows, birds flit through tamarisk, and the world feels distant, as if the mainland is a rumour you once heard. Honest, slow, and full of strange beauty. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///yummy.tolerable.slices 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #285 • Time: 11:30am – 1st May 2025, English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐ 1 / 5 • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5 / 5 • Steps: 7,500 • Distance: 3.78 Miles / 6.08 km • Weather: Overcast but still warm!
