(Please note: The keyword I mentioned in this video doesn't work on Youtube, only on Facebook!) Spring is calling, and we answered with the cutest giant carrot door hanger! In this live craft, my daughter Jenny (from Just Jenny) takes you step-by-step through painting, distressing, and stenciling a wood carrot cutout, then finishes it with a layered ribbon bow and a rustic wire hanger. It’s perfectly sized for your front door or to tuck into a spring vignette: approximately 19.5" tall x 7.5" wide. If you love cheerful farmhouse-style Easter decor with a vintage touch, you’ll enjoy this easy, budget-friendly DIY. What we make A rustic, oversized carrot door hanger with a “Happy Easter Bunny” silkscreen transfer centered on the carrot and a fluffy bow on top. Weathered, intentional distressing for that perfectly aged, farmhouse look. A ready-to-hang piece using simple punched holes and curly wired “pigtails.” Techniques you’ll learn How to use chalk paste as paint and thin it with distilled water for smoother coverage. Layering and distressing with stain/ink to add depth and dimension (without losing the carrot color). Prepping your surface with wax so stencils release cleanly. Fuzzing and applying a reusable silkscreen transfer for crisp, clean lines. Softening bright white designs to match a distressed finish. Quick bow stacking, tying, and dovetail/fishtail trimming for a fuller look. Simple wood hole punching and wire curling for a cute, sturdy hanger. Supplies we used Wood carrot cutout (approx. 19.5" x 7.5") Chalk paste: Orange Peel (carrot), Meadow (greens), Bright White (transfer) Silkscreen transfer stencil: Happy Easter Bunny Surface wax Distressing products: Dixie Belle Tobacco Road (stain/wax) and Distress Ink in Ground Espresso Sanding block Squeegee/scraper Brushes (a basic brush or even a makeup brush works in a pinch) Masking/painter’s tape Heat tool or hair dryer Hot glue gun and sticks Assorted ribbons + jute/twine Hole punch for wood (or small drill) + rusty wire Paper towels and distilled water Helpful tips from the live If your paste feels thick, revive it with a little distilled water and good stirring. Don’t overwork your base coat—leave some uneven spots for natural distress later. Focus extra aging on the carrot tip and edges for a realistic “fresh from the garden” look. Always wax and fuzz before using a sticky transfer over chalk-painted surfaces. Remove your stencil while the paste is still wet for a crisp reveal. If your white design looks a bit too “new,” lightly brush over it with distress ink. Go generous with hot glue on the bow so it endures porch breezes. Personalize with mini clay carrots, a family name, or use it as a wreath insert. I’m so proud of how this turned out—bright, happy, and perfectly “dingy” in all the right places. Whether you hang it solo or pair it with a wreath, this carrot brings instant spring charm to your door. If you craft along, tag me—I’d love to share your project!
