With this type of exercise, our goal is to improve speed-strength, or our ability to generate force quickly. For this type of strength adaptation, moving as fast as possible is ideal because it ensures that our effort is high! And while these “top speed”-based exercises have obvious carryover to athletic activities like sports, they also have valuable benefits for our daily-life movements in general – especially as we age. For example, the better able we are to produce force quickly, the more likely we’ll be able to “catch ourselves” if we trip or otherwise lose our balance. This can be extremely important for the prevention of falls in older populations. In a yoga practice, we rarely move fast enough that our movements could be considered "explosive" from a movement science standpoint.
