Within the Southern Rocky Mountains and straddling the borders of Colorado and New Mexico is one of the United States' most beloved tourist railroad. Originally constructed in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande, later Denver & Rio Grande Western, the now Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has been running trains between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado, for the past 55 years, hauling happy passengers through the beautiful scenery from the rolling hills and deserts near Antonito, the impressive Toltec Gorge, or the amazing views of the Wolf Creek Valley from Cumbres Pass. In late September of 2025, my good friend @TrainChamber and I ventured to the Cumbres & Toltec, intending to document the railroad within the expanding fall foliage. We had a fantastic time chasing the three operating K-36 class locomotives as they worked hard up the brutal 4% grade up Cumbres Pass. Locomotives #484, with a recently rebuilt D&RGW 5 Chime, #487, also with a D&RGW 5 Chime, and #488, with a Nathan 5 Chime, and their crews, all put on a spectacular show of force and mastery of the legendary grade up Cumbres Pass through the beautiful fall colors. I hope you all enjoy my early fall production of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad! Check out @TrainChamber's video too!
