Dr. Aaron M. Nilhas is a board-certified general surgeon with Wichita Surgical Specialists, specializing in endocrine, gastrointestinal, hernia, and gallbladder surgery, as well as acute care surgery. "I'm Aaron Nilhas, a general surgeon with Wichita Surgical Specialists. I grew up out in Western Kansas on a farm, WaKeeney, Kansas. So, I went to medical school at the University of Kansas, two years in Kansas City and then two years in Wichita. My last two years in Wichita I really loved it here, so I spent five years in residency here. So, the reason I decided to become a surgeon is growing up I enjoyed working my hands, helping my dad take care of calves on the farm, and a medical experience of mine made me rethink things and decide to take care of people instead of animals. So, I’m a broad-based general surgeon. I do a lot of intra-abdominal work … gallbladders, hernias, colon resections, upper and lower endoscopy. I like to build a rapport with my patients. After establishing a relationship, I generally like to educate them on the risks and benefits of the operation, if we were to proceed. And then, ultimately, let them decide what is best for them. I do offer a recommendation and then whatever they choose, I would stand behind them and help guide them in the right direction of getting better. I just want patients to know that even though I might not be in their shoes, I try to put myself in their shoes as much as possible, to understand what they're going through and to sympathize and help them get through what they're dealing with. Coming from a small town. this is like a big city to me. It has everything I’d ever want, but yet not too big, to where it’s very easy to get around. Also, Wichita provides a very strong medical community which working through Wichita Surgical Specialists, I have the privilege of teaching medical students and future surgeons for the state of Kansas, and Wichita is very strong about providing future surgeons for Kansas. Looking back at my medical training, it is a grueling process. However, there's no feeling like providing care for those in need and seeing a positive outcome from it and saving lives. Unfortunately, with surgery we meet patients, we take care of them and we usually don't see them again until they have a surgical problem. I have had some instances where I've had cakes baked and cookies baked, which I've had to buy some new pants because of that. I’m married. I have a beautiful wife about one year now. We have three dogs. We enjoying walking our dogs in our spare time. Also, I enjoy hunting and fishing."
