Today's video covers upper thoracic mobility exercises, which can help reduce neck and upper back pain and improve neck range of motion. The upper thoracic spine (T1–T4) is a transitional zone between the more mobile cervical spine and the more stable mid-to-lower thoracic region. Because of its anatomical position and connection to both the rib cage and cervical spine, this area often becomes stiff—especially in individuals who spend long periods sitting, looking down at screens, or performing repetitive overhead activities. Limited mobility in the upper thoracic region can increase mechanical stress on the lower cervical spine, contributing to neck pain, headaches, and reduced functional movement in the upper body. The vertebrae in the T1–T4 region work closely with the lower cervical vertebrae (C5–C7) to coordinate neck and upper trunk motion. When this area lacks mobility, the cervical spine often compensates by moving excessively, which can overload muscles, joints, and neural tissues. Physical therapy exercises that improve upper thoracic extension, rotation, and posture can be highly effective in reducing neck pain and restoring optimal movement patterns. In this video, we’ll go over evidence-informed strategies to mobilize the upper thoracic spine and support healthier cervical spine mechanics.
