Pull-ups are insanely hard for most people and in this video I go over exactly why it is that so many men and women struggle to do even one pull-up and conversely, why can some people do pull-ups almost effortlessly? Pull-ups were a mandatory back muscle development exercise for me and all beginners when I started natural bodybuilding and over the years I have seen so many frustrated by the fact that they can only do a few pull-ups unassisted. That being said, much of the inherent difficulty in doing pull-ups comes from basic physics. In that it's a bodyweight exercise and as such, unlike a regular exercise like a barbell curl whereby you would start with a weight you can handle, pull-ups are hard because you start at times with over your maximum weight. And there's nothing you can do in the moment to reduce that weight to make it manageable. Which leads to the second reason why pullups are hard, and gain, the physics of the exercise are such that the more you weigh, the harder it is. So next time someone who doesn't weigh much tells you how easy pull ups are, feel free to ignore them. That being said, many who weigh over 200lbs, like myself, can do pull-ups and I go over my own pull up progression story which neatly explains why I can do pull ups easily and have always been able to do so. I also go over what you can do if you CAN'T do a pull-up, as by focusing instead on the eccentric aspects of the exercise, you can get all the benefits of a pull-up in terms of strength and muscle development even if you can't do one. In fact, I highly recommend the high intensity training negative pull-up variants for everyone, and it's been extremely beneficial to my overall back development as a natural bodybuilder.
