The Problem with ‘ISIS Brides’ | Maya Foa | TEDxOxford

The UK Government and the media say these women are "ISIS brides" and should not be allowed back into Britain. But who are they? Are they really the 'monsters' depicted in British newspapers, or is there more to the story? In this talk, Maya goes behind the headlines to tell the stories of three so-called "Isis Brides" who she has met in the camps in North-East Syria. They include a teenager targeted by a sophisticated ISIS trafficking organisation, a girl groomed by an older woman online, and a wife who followed her husband to Syria with her children. Maya Foa leads a team of lawyers fighting against grave human rights abuses, including the death penalty, torture, rendition, extrajudicial imprisonment and unlawful drone strikes. Her clients include British women who fled ISIS territory and are now held without charge or trial with their children in detention camps in North-East Syria.
