Celebrating our 100th event in the IWCS Webinar Series, we are thrilled to feature novel optical fiber research brought to you by John Ballato, professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University! This study highlights the unique opportunities afforded by recent materials advancements in fiber-optic-based sensor and laser systems. Three examples are summarized and include (i) Brillouin athermal fibers for sensors, (ii) Rayleigh and fiber Bragg grating athermal fibers, and (iii) fibers that can heat or cool, depending on optical pump conditions. By having the fiber do the work, greater simplicity in the device and associated system can result, leading to reductions in complexity and cost. About the presenter: John Ballato is a professor of materials science and engineering at Clemson University, where he also holds the J. E. Sirrine Endowed Chair of Optical Fiber.
