Reading of the first letter of the Apostle Saint John (4,19–5,4): We love God, because he loved us first. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love his brother, whom he sees, cannot love God, whom he does not see. And we have received this commandment from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God; and everyone who loves the one who gives being also loves the one who has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God: if we love God and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever has been born of God conquers the world. And what has gained the victory over the world is our faith. The Word of God Psalm Ps 71,1-2.14.15bc.17 R/. All the peoples of the earth shall bow down before you, Lord My God, entrust your judgment to the king, your justice to the king’s son, that he may govern your people with justice, your humble ones with righteousness. R/. He shall rescue their lives from violence, their blood shall be precious in his sight. May they pray for him continually and bless him all the day. R/. May his name endure forever, and his fame last like the sun; may he be the blessing of all the peoples, and may all the races of the earth call him blessed. R/. Today’s Gospel Reading of the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke (4,14-22a): At that time, Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit; and his fame spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues, and all praised him. He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, entered the synagogue, as was his custom on the sabbath, and stood up to read. They handed him the book of the prophet Isaiah and, unrolling it, he found the passage where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the Gospel to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and sight to the blind. To let the oppressed go free; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And, rolling up the book, he gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. The Word of the Lord
