with Anya Kurennaya, Part-Time Associate Teaching Professor This workshop is about how instructors might incorporate small, ongoing observational exercises that allow students to connect to the world around them and peer into each other's lives. The activity is based on the ideas discussed in Jenny Odell's "How to Do Nothing," which emphasizes real-time, real-life observation separate from a screen or device. After discussing the reading, students were asked to chronicle things they noticed/observed, document them, and report on their observations weekly. They were also asked to view and leave feedback for their peers. After 5 weeks, they answered reflection questions and, in some cases, made zines that synthesized and built on their observations. From those deliverables, students reported a better sense of mental well-being, higher levels of creativity and observation, and a better sense of camaraderie with their peers.
