Adaptive Thermogenesis 🤓 What is it? 🧐 Adaptive thermogenesis refers to the decrease in RMR (resting metabolic rate) that occurs with weight loss, beyond what we can predict solely based on the loss of body weight and the corresponding changes in fat and lean tissues. In simpler terms, adaptive thermogenesis is when your body adjusts the amount of energy it burns to match its current circumstances ✅ Why is this important? 😅 Many people mistakenly believe that their weight loss journey should follow a constant downward trajectory, but that’s not the case 🙅♂️. Initially, your body responds well, and you’ll see positive changes in your weight loss results. However, as your body adapts to these changes over time, progress may slow down. To address this, it’s crucial to understand that: 1. The calorie deficit/nutrition plan you began your journey with may not be as effective as you age, experience lifestyle changes, lose weight, or change exercise habits. 2. It is unwise to try to continually lose weight over a 6-12 month period. Lose a bit of fat/weight, then shift into a period where you focus on maintaining that result before going again. E.g., aim to lose weight for 8-9 weeks, then take a break for 4 weeks and go again. This will improve adherence and increase the likelihood of sustaining your result.
