In this final episode of our series "Stages of Tooth Decay" Wendy focuses on the final and truly painful stage of tooth decay. That's when the bacteria enter the tooth's pulp, the tooth's nerve center. From there, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body. At the tooth site, a big pocket of pus (called an abscess) can form, as the body tries to fight the bacteria. You may see swelling and feel intense pain. Left untreated, a tooth infection can cause septic shock and actually kill. If you suspect a tooth infection, please go to the dentist! They will consider it an emergency, prescribe the correct antibiotic, and give you the choice of having the tooth pulled or restoring it with a procedure called a root canal. Either way, this will get expensive, so better to prevent cavities by brushing and flossing and treating cavities before they get large!
