The Face Pull is an excellent exercise that work the muscles of the rear delts, traps, and upper back. It's a compound movement that allows for relatively heavy weights to be lifted for these muscles. Face Pull Variation # 1: Most people like to do face pulls with a rope attachment. But one draw back with using the rope is that it can be a bit awkward on the wrists and you may find that you lose your grip when lifting heavy weights. Face Pull Variation # 2: But a good face pull alternative is to use 2 single cable pulley handle attachments instead of the rope. Most gyms these days have the nylon cable pulley handles and the are great for doing face pulls. Just attach 2 handles to the cable pulley and perform the face pull as you normally would with the rope. Face Pull Variation # 3: Another issue people have with face pulls is balance and foot placement - especially as you work up to lifting heavier weights . A lot of times guys end up leaning back to over compensate for the heavier weights and their feet could slip on the floor. If this is a problem, you can do your face pulls on a seated cable row machine. To do this just attach a rope or 2 single pulley handles to the low pulley cable and perform your face pulls seated. By doing them this way you'll be able to lift much heavier weights with no fear of falling backwards and losing your balance.
