Reflective portfolios in biological sciences explores how structured reflection can be embedded within a science‑focused curriculum to support skills development, self‑awareness, and student engagement. In this talk, Alison Cullinane, Lecturer in Biological Education, Portfolio Director and Cohort Lead at the University of Edinburgh, shares the design and early implementation of a reflective portfolio within the School of Biological Sciences. The session outlines the rationale behind introducing reflective portfolios as part of a wider curriculum reform, particularly for first‑year science students who may be new to reflective practice. Alison explains how PebblePad has been used to scaffold reflection through structured prompts, weekly activities, and skills‑based reflection, gradually supporting students to articulate their learning, development, and experiences. The talk demonstrates how portfolio data can be used to surface patterns in skills development, support curriculum evaluation, and present evidence in ways that resonate with scientific colleagues. Student feedback and examples highlight the impact of reflection on confidence, self‑awareness, and career readiness, alongside practical insights into assessment design, staff engagement, and ongoing challenges. This talk took place at the studio, Birmingham in June 2023.
