Today's video is all on how to fix a high hamstring tendinopathy. You'll learn how to screen for this injury and progressions of exercise to help rehab your body back to 100% While a hamstring strain is common in sports such as soccer, hockey, and track and field, an injury to the tendon (tendinopathy) is more common in the strength sports of powerlifting, weightlifting, and CrossFit. When the hip is flexed to a great degree, the hamstring tendon is tensioned and compressed against the bony pelvis. If this compression occurs often enough and with enough force, the tendon can become overloaded, leading to pain. A tendinopathy injury can be sparked in a few ways. The first is acute overload in one specific workout or a group of training sessions that were much more intense than normal. In this scenario, the tendon experiences much higher load than it can currently tolerate. Tendinopathy can also occur upon returning to relatively normal training after taking an extended break (such as a weeklong vacation or time away to recover from a different injury). In this scenario, the time away from the gym leads to an adaptive lowering of the tendon’s load capacity. Jumping quickly back into “normal training” causes a similar overload and sparks the exaggerated cellular response (called reactive tendinopathy). For example, suddenly introducing high-volume sprinting, squatting, or hurdle exercises into an athlete’s training may result in overload of a hamstring tendon and spark the injury process. Because pain is generated when the tendon is loaded and compressed, this injury often brings out pain in a deep squat or when sitting on a hard surface, but rarely during activities like slow walking on a level surface, standing, or lying down. This injury does not create pain that radiates down the thigh (which would be seen with sciatic nerve irritation from the piriformis or an injury to the low back, such as a herniated disc).
