The lats are amazing muscles that help us feel like superstars rocking out some pull-ups. But... (You knew there was a but coming, didn’t you?) They can cause some serious pressure management issues with the core and pelvic floor. They can also kick in to be assisters for just about everything from midback work to breathing. This can cause them to become very tight trying to do all the jobs they shouldn't be doing. If you think your lats might be locking down, and not in a good way, try these two release techniques to get them moving again. If you notice it becomes a recurrent issue and they always feel tight, try taking a season off from doing lat work and simply work the middle and lower traps more. I’ve actually spent whole training cycles not doing a single pull-up only to come back to pull-ups stronger than when I left off due to working scapula retraction muscles. I’m always amazed at how far building a bit of scapula stability will go.
