The year 2026 marks 25 years since Coaster F59PHI Locomotives 3001 and 3002 were built by EMD in La Grange, Illinois in 2001 before undergoing test runs later that year as well as the following year 2002. The two locomotives would then begin regular service during mid-2002 after all the test runs were completed. Even though the Coaster was mostly well known for having F40PHM-2C Locomotives built by Morrison-Knudsen, the two F59s numbered 3001 and 3002 were built by EMD as a backup for the commuter rail service operating in San Diego County while all the F40s were sent in for rebuilds at the Juniata Locomotive Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania between late 2002 and mid-2008. After the rebuilds were complete, the F59s continued in service with the railroad and spent a good amount of time working with the F40s until their final days would eventually come. In 2017, Coaster ordered 5 Chargers from Siemens to replace the 5 F40s as well as another 4 Chargers from Siemens in 2019 to replace the F59s. In 2021, the last F40s made their final runs before being retired while the F59s continued in service until 2023 when the last batch of 4 Chargers from Siemens had arrived to replace the railroad's aging fleet of locomotives from the mid-1990s and early 2000s. For this video, I have decided to include video clips of both Coaster F59PHI Locomotives numbered 3001 and 3002 operating in service as well as after they were removed from mainline service. Both units were moved to the Stuart Mesa Maintenance Facility in Oceanside where 3001 would be used as a yard switcher. In late 2025, 3002 would be shipped off to Mexico to join several retired F59PHIs formerly operated by Metrolink. And as a special bonus, I have even included a video clip of a mural painting in Solana Beach of a Coaster F59PHI passing under the Highway 101 overpass at Torrey Pines State Beach, which is located just south of Del Mar. I hope you enjoy this video, and I'll see you next time for more exciting railroading and non-railroading adventures right here on the YouTube channel.
