Despite some trainers like Jeff Cavaliere of Athlean-X claiming to be athletic but focusing mostly on vanity exercises like core work under perfect lighting and curls with bands, training to be more athletic generally means first getting strong on the basic movements. After that, you can and SHOULD devote a lot of time to speed and power training. Learn how to be explosive. A LOT of it is genetic, but some of it is a skill and it can be learned. Move faster, intention is everything. Take that base of strength, and draw from it the power to destroy your enemies on the field. In reality, "train like an athlete, look like an athlete" isn't a great mantra because it doesn't mean anything. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes, but generally speaking, just getting stronger on the basic movements and then using that base to get faster across all loads and exercise variations targeting the main musculature is enough.
