In this embryology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents a detailed overview of the development of the urinary system, tracing the transformation of intermediate mesoderm into the complex structures that form the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and parts of the urethra. This lecture highlights the sequential formation of the pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros, and how these embryonic kidneys relate in structure and function. We begin by examining the origin and regression of the pronephros and mesonephros, and then shift focus to the metanephros, the definitive kidney. Zach explains the interaction between the ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme, which drives nephron formation and the branching morphogenesis of the collecting system. The lecture also discusses the ascent of the kidneys, rotation, and changes in their blood supply, as well as the development of the ureters from the ureteric buds. Finally, we explore the embryology of the bladder and urethra, including the division of the cloaca by the urorectal septum, and the formation of the trigone region from mesonephric duct tissue.
